A small but very choosey selection, focusing on philosophy and poetry, but with a decent literary fiction section as well. Mother Foucault's harkens back to the vanishing standard of the NYC Village bookshop, meant to be browsed often for new arrivals, for that unexpected exciting find, not for the specific title you need or a hot new release. It's a refreshing change from the "other" book store in town, the existence of which has driven away almost all smaller bookstores like this one. That, plus a calendar of local literary events and an adorable No Cell Phone Use policy makes this shop very worthy of your time.
One of my favorite bookstores in Portland. They offer many hard-to-find books at reasonable prices. They are especially strong in foreign language, literature, and philosophy. The store is in a really nice space and is the perfect size for browsing. They also host many readings.
